The spirit of swing at the Cité du livre
The Aixtraswing association invites you on a journey into Jazz from the 1920s to 1940s with a poster exhibition entitled: The Spirit of Swing.
In those years, the Jeans / T-shirt fashion was not yet the norm, the dance craze hit the youth in the 4 corners of the United States and made them bounce, hop and jump to the Lindy hopin crowded dance halls.
Why? Well, probably because the population marked by the 1st world war then the 1929 crisis and then the rise of 2nd world war tried to believe in a better future. As a result, the joy of living the music and making the wildest dances that ever existed made the Swing!
The return to the music and dances of the 1930s is more than a trend, it is a genuine cultural movement.
This exhibition offers an overview of the main artists, the historical context in which they evolved, the innovations brought by swing craze (fashion, dance, way of playing music) in the 1st half of the 20th century.
The journey also raises the race question in the United States, the need to live together in our modern and globalized lives.
